Officials working to determine what caused fire at Sussex home

SUSSEX (WITI) — Investigators continue to work to determine what sparked a massive fire that destroyed two cars, a garage, and left a house in ruins Saturday night, May 18th.

Neighbors told FOX6 News they heard what sounded like fireworks, followed by what sounded like an explosion. This, as a house on Sunset Drive was engulfed in flames.

“I heard a loud ‘bang.’ Real, super loud. I came running outside to see what it was, and as soon as I came out of my house, I saw the garage was in flames,” Wayne Weinfurter said.

Weinfurter lives across the street. He and other neighbors say they heard fireworks before the ‘bangs.’

Possible explosion leads to fire at Sussex home

SUSSEX (WITI) — A house went up in flames near Sunset and Hickory Dr. in Sussex late Saturday night, May 18th.

Just before 10 p.m., several people living in the area say they heard an explosion — which led to the flames. That is not confirmed by officials.

Firefighters say the fire started in the garage and then spread to the home. They estimate damage to be more than $100,000.

Nobody was hurt — and there’s no word on the exact cause of the blast.

May 19-25 is Emerald Ash Borer Awareness Week

MADISON (WITI) -- Emerald ash borer, already known to infest 13 Wisconsin counties, threatens cityscapes and forests with its tree-killing ways. But it's still possible to slow its spread, giving science a chance to find solutions and public and private land owners time to get replacement trees started.

That's why Gov. Walker has proclaimed May 19-25 Emerald Ash Borer Awareness Week – to draw Wisconsin citizens' attention to the role they can play in the battle. This particular week was chosen nationwide because Memorial Day weekend May 25-27 is the beginning of the summer tourism season, when the risk is high for people to inadvertently move EAB and other pests to new areas on firewood.

"…Citizens and visitors alike should understand the potential effects of the EAB on the environment and the economy of Wisconsin, the Great Lakes region and the nation," the Governor said in his proclamation.

Student with down syndrome wins prom king by a landslide

MENOMONEE FALLS (WITI) — Prescott Doebler, a junior with down syndrome at Menomonee Falls High School, was surprised to be selected to prom court by his classmates. Saturday night at the prom, he was shocked to be crowned king.

“He knows more people here than some of the teachers here know. You walk down the hall it’s ‘hi Prescott, hi Prescott,’” said teacher Melody Czubinski.

Doebler is a special ed student, and part of Best Buddies, a program that helps build leadership skills as well as friendships.

“I don’t think Prescott realizes how special this is other than he loves to be social,” said Prescott’s mother, Carol Doebler.

He may not have realized how special it was until he was voted Junior Prom King — by a landslide.
