Menomonee Falls Water Utility to flush water mains

The Menomonee Falls Water Utility will be cleaning and flushing water mains from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. beginning April 4th and continuing through May 13th. The flushing will remove most of the natural minerals that have settled in the mains such as iron, a harmless-reddish brown mineral that discolors the water.

If you observe the Water Utility personnel working in your area, refrain from using water or use as little as possible for one-half to three-quarters of an hour to insure that the water has settled in the mains. This will also help prevent any iron from being drawn into your water piping system.

If you do find that your water has become discolored, refrain from using it for an additional one-half to three-quarters of an hour. Then draw off the remaining discolored water through the COLD WATER FAUCET ONLY.

Sewage-sniffing dog to make appearance at Menomonee Falls Pet Fair

Have you ever heard of a sewage-sniffing dog? That's exactly the type of dog you'll see when you meet Scott Reynolds's dog Sable at the Menomonee Falls Pet Fair.

Sable, the four-year-old German Shepard mix, can detect raw sewage flowing into sewers which pollute area rivers.

Sable was adopted in March 2007 as a 15-month-old from Mackenzie's Animal Shelter in Michigan.

Sable began training in April 2007 and was out sniffing for pollution just a few months later in August 2007.  Before Sable, cities were burdened with high costs to investigate their storm sewer systems.  Now, many cities are finding hiring a professional sniffer is a low-cost, low-tech method to investigate sewer connections.

After working for three years, Sable has visited over 500 sites to outfalls and upstream investigations.

Scott Reynolds and his pack of professional sniffers will be at the Menomonee Falls Pet Fair on Saturday, August 21.
