2013 Herb Kohl Foundation scholarship winners announced

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The selection committee for the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Scholarship and Fellowship Program has announced recipients of the 2013 Herb Kohl Foundation awards for students and teachers.

The $1,000 awards are being made to 100 teachers, their schools, and 187 graduating high school students. WInners in southeast Wisconsin include: 

 

Noodles & Company to raise money for marching bands on Oct. 15th

Noodles & Company is raising money for local high school marching bands on October 15th. Marching bands from Richfield and West Bend will perform in front of Noodles & Company from 5pm - 7pm.

Noodles & Company will donate $1 for every pork entree is sold between 5pm  - 7pm.

WI teachers rally with striking Chicago teachers

Wisconsin teachers held a rally Friday evening at the state Capitol in Madison. Saturday, the teachers plan a rally in Milwaukee. This is all as a show of solidarity with Chicago Public School teachers.

The offering of moral support doesn't end in Milwaukee. Teachers' unions around the state of Wisconsin are organizing buses to head to Chicago on Saturday to participate as what's being referred to as a “Wisconsin-style” rally.

“Wisconsin was the center of the national fight over union rights last year when Republican Gov. Scott Walker proposed effectively ending collective bargaining rights for teachers and other public workers,” according to the Associated Press report.

Eight Metro Milwaukee high schools to compete in Admirals Cup

Milwaukee Admirals Governor/CEO Harris Turer announced today that the team will host the Admirals Cup presented by Bradley Corporation from December 23rd through December 28th.  For the third straight year the Admirals Cup will include eight high schools from the metro Milwaukee area with games taking place at Wilson Park and the Bradley Center.  The Admirals Cup is once again held in conjunction with a pair of 7:00 pm Admirals games on December 26th and 28th.

Brookfield, Cedarburg, Germantown, Kettle Moraine, Greendale, Marquette University High School, Whitefish Bay/Nicolet/Shorewood and Hartland Arrowhead High School will each play three games and all of the squads will play one of their games on the Bradley Center ice.

Sex Ed 101: Abstinence & Marriage

A Senate bill passed Wednesday would require schools that offer sexual education courses to promote marriage and abstinence as the only definite way to prevent marriage according to an article published in The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The Republican-supported proposal passed with a 17-15 vote and is now being forward to the Assembly which is mostly Republican run. When the Democrat's were in charge, this type of education was barred.

Minnesota-Wisconsin Interstate Tuition Reciprocity Program will continue in 2011-2012

The Higher Educational Aids Board (HEAB) has announced that Minnesota has signed the 2011-2012 administrative memorandum for the Minnesota-Wisconsin Interstate Tuition Reciprocity Program,

This program will continue to serve Wisconsin residents that choose their college career to be in Minnesota.

“This new tuition reciprocity agreement with the State of Minnesota makes college education more affordable for Wisconsin residents,” Governor Walker said. “Smaller tuition bills widen access to higher education, and that’s a win-win situation for students and Wisconsin.”
